Walk. Ride. Explore. Connect

"Greensboro stands alone as the only North Carolina city that will have an urban trail that encircles downtown. This is made possible by the configuration of old railroad tracks and rail yards, and a city street network that affords the opportunity. The Downtown Greenway will become a signature landscape within Greensboro in the years to come."
– Chuck Flink, President, Greenways Inc.

Imagine being able to walk around downtown Greensboro -- or getting on your bike to ride safely around the center city. Imagine an urban trail that would enable you to EXPLORE the dozen-plus neighborhoods at the heart of Greensboro, a place where you might CONNECT with old friends and make new ones.

With your help, this won't require an act of imagination. The Downtown Greenway, a planned 4.2-mile loop around downtown Greensboro, will provide a place for residents and visitors to exercise, see local neighborhoods and view public art. It will also become a place for planned and spontaneous meetings with others from the community - a tangible, visible example of community.

Ribbon Cutting for Downtown Greenway

The ribbon cutting for the first completed section of the Downtown Greenway will take place Wednesday, March 24 at 4:00pm near the two large trees at the midway point on the trail (approximately 700 yards west from South Eugene Street).  Just look for the tents & chairs!

At 5:00pm we’ll move across Eugene Street for a reception at the North State Milling Company, 816 South Elm Street, outdoors if the weather permits and indoors if not.

A community program will follow and begins at 5:30pm, with 3 presentations related to the Downtown Greenway from a local perspective as well as statewide and national.  An update on the Downtown Greenway – its progress and status will be one.  Dan Curry, Acting Director of Greensboro’s Housing & Community Development department will speak on economic development opportunities that exist along the Greenway, created by Greensboro’s unique circumstances.  The third speaker is Sig Hutchinson who has been on the cutting edge of greenway development and open space preservation in North Carolina for more than a decade where he has personally led four bond referendums totaling more than $140 million dollars and created hundreds of miles of interconnected greenways throughout the Triangle region of North Carolina. Sig speaks about his passion of connecting every citizen to the greenway and how the greenways are reshaping the character of the region. Sig will energize the audience with examples and stories to inspire others to reach their dreams and follow their passions.”
